Job Opportunity: Data Analyst, Air Quality Life Index (AQLI)

The Air Quality Life Index is seeking a Data Analyst, based in India.

The Air Quality Life Index (AQLI) is a globally recognized, award-winning initiative aimed at creating demand for clean air action globally, by providing hyper-local data on impacts of air pollution on human life expectancy in 252 countries and territories around the world.   The programme generates an annual report synthesizing the state of global air quality in countries across the world, creates regionally tailored analyses, maintains an interactive website, engage community members in virtual and in-person settings, and shares the underlying data and analyses in an open format on GitHub.

To help us conduct the underlying data analysis for the report and organise/ maintain our GitHub repository, we seek to hire a Data Analyst adept at working with geospatial datasets, fluent in one or more computer languages (e.g., R, Python) and comfortable working with and maintaining our open-source GitHub repository.

Reporting to: Data Specialist, Air Quality Life Index

Responsibilities:

Implement the annual data pipeline process including processing raw satellite data into usable formats and applying further calculations to processed and formatted data.

Maintaining data in a ready-to-play with format and updating of openly accessible Github repository.

Performing analyses and generating figures (time series analysis, spatial averaging, regional comparisons, etc) for the AQLI Annual report, as well as for other communication and outreach activities.

Writing text to describe methodologies and results from analyses.

Occasional travel to conferences and other venues to present AQLI findings.

Assisting with data collection, cleaning, preliminary data analysis, and preparation of documents and presentations for dissemination.

Liaising with external partners, in particular our website developers to continue development of the AQLI platform.

Any other project related tasks on and as needed basis, including (but not limited to) desk/literature survey or data analyses and support in preparation for meetings and presentations for developing new partnerships, as assigned by the AQLI Director.

Education

Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in economics, Statistics, Data Science, or other related field.

Experience

At least 2 years of experience in analysing geospatial datasets using R or Python, especially in an open-source environment.

Experience in working with air quality data sets, preferred.

Competencies

Fluency in one or more computer languages (e.g., R, Python, STATA) is a must.

Experience in working with geospatial datasets, organising and managing databases.

Experience working on projects in an open-source environment with an existing portfolio on GitHub.

A knack for exploring data and identifying potential questions that can be answered using such data (please demonstrate this through an example in your cover letter).

Flexible, self-motivated, detail-oriented, and demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.

Demonstrated team player.  This is a remote role where the entire team gets together virtually at least once a week.  Skills to navigate relationships with team members in a virtual environment are critical.

Strong technical writing and presentation skills.

Awareness of the air pollution scientific vocabulary, preferred.

Working Conditions

This is a remote role. The candidate should be willing to travel up to 20 percent of their time to attend any in-person meetings with the AQLI team based in Delhi.
